Les Arcs/La Plagne, France
What’s cool: Five villages, four of which are named after their approximate altitude. The Vanoise Express, a double decker cable car, connects the two resorts across the Tarentaise Valley. High-speed rail service now makes the area the only ski resort in Europe easily accessible from London. The Eurostar at St. Pancras Station can whisk you to Bourg St. Maurice, from where a funicular railway takes you up to the slopes.
Where to bunk: Look no further than L’Aiguille Grive Chalets Hôtel, a collection of modernist chalets that wouldn’t be out of place in the Rockies (with astounding views). An excellent alternative is the Mercure Les Arcs 1800 Hotel, with views from rooms of the Tarentaise Valley and Mont Blanc.
